Saga Bar Association Confirms Request to Review DNA Lab Misconduct as Lawyers Begin Response

The bar’s chair urged police to show the basis for claiming court cases were unaffected.

Overview

  • At an Oct. 9 press briefing, the bar said a person tested during 2017–2024 asked it to verify whether the former Saga forensic lab employee handled their DNA analysis.
  • Volunteer lawyers are evaluating how to proceed, and the bar says it has started handling one written plea from a case party.
  • The chair reported six contacts so far, including four phone calls and another letter about non-DNA forensic work at a Kyushu investigative agency.
  • He called for disclosure of the full record of the former technician’s 632 assignments, not only the 130 cases police have labeled improper.
  • The requester’s identity and role in the original case remain undisclosed, and no case-level findings have been released.
