SafeWork NSW Orders UTS to Pause Job Cuts Over ‘Serious and Imminent’ Psychological Risk

SafeWork NSW ruled that sudden meeting notices with ‘finalistic’ language posed a serious psychological risk to roughly 800 employees.

Overview

  • UTS cancelled meetings with about 800 affected staff and paused the release of its Academic Change Proposal after receiving the prohibition notice.
  • The notice, issued by inspector Mostafa Issa, remains until psychosocial controls are put in place following worker consultation, and UTS has 14 days to seek a review.
  • UTS had flagged cuts of about 400 roles as part of roughly $100 million in savings and previously paused enrolments in 120 courses, including initial teacher education.
  • The regulator cited unexpected meeting invitations, ‘finalistic’ wording, insufficient preparation time, and unclear access to supports as psychosocial hazards.
  • UTS argues the overhaul is needed after five years of deficits and rejects claims of poor consultation, while the NTEU hails a rare rebuke and continues two disputes in the Fair Work Commission.
