On June 15, workers started a limited strike at Safeway/Alberstons locations in four Colorado cities over numerous unfair labor practices.

Overview

  • Union members walked out of four Safeway stores and a Denver distribution center on June 15 after contract negotiations collapsed
  • Workers are demanding relief from chronic understaffing, fully funded health benefits and higher wages
  • United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 represents about 7,000 Safeway employees statewide and has authorized additional strike votes
  • Safeway officials say they remain committed to productive discussions and are negotiating in good faith toward a new agreement
  • The union is considering walkouts at King Soopers locations after their no-strike pact expired on June 8, potentially widening the grocery chain dispute
