Safeway Strike Reaches Seven Sites Across Colorado

Union leaders say they will escalate strikes until Safeway addresses key contract demands.

On June 15, workers started a limited strike at Safeway/Alberstons locations in four Colorado cities over numerous unfair labor practices.

The Colorado Safeway/Albertsons strike has expended to two more cities.

Overview

  • Picket lines have spread to seven sites, with walkouts now active at Castle Rock and Littleton in addition to stores in Estes Park, Fountain, two Pueblo locations and a Denver distribution center.
  • Union members are striking over chronic understaffing, cuts to health care contributions and proposed changes to pension benefits for retirees.
  • Safeway spokesperson Heather Halpape said the company remains committed to good-faith talks and called unfair labor practice claims without merit.
  • Strike authorization votes are in progress at stores in Colorado Springs, Fort Collins, Greeley, Longmont, Loveland while the union withholds future strike targets to preserve leverage.
  • United Food and Commercial Workers Local7 president Kim Cordova indicated that King Soopers workers could rejoin picket lines if contract talks with Kroger stall.
