Sabarmati Jail Assault on Ricin-Plot Accused Sparks FIR, Security Probe

Investigators are examining possible custody lapses after three undertrials injured the high‑risk prisoner inside a fortified wing.

Overview

  • Dr Ahmed Mohiyuddin Saiyed, the prime accused in an alleged ricin terror plot, was attacked around 7 am on November 18 inside Sabarmati Central Jail’s high‑security area.
  • An FIR filed at Ranip police station names undertrials Anil Kumar, Shivam Sharma and Ankit Lodhi, booked under BNS sections 115(2), 117(2) and 54.
  • Saiyed suffered eye and facial injuries, received treatment at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, was reported stable, and was returned to judicial custody.
  • The Gujarat ATS, jail administration and city police are reviewing CCTV, gathering forensic evidence from the barracks, and questioning inmates and staff; the three alleged attackers have been moved pending inquiry.
  • Police say the motive remains unclear, with unconfirmed reports of a ‘patriotism’ angle under scrutiny; Saiyed was arrested this month under UAPA after investigators recovered pistols, cartridges and about four litres of castor oil.
