Saab Unveils Sweden’s First GlobalEye AEW&C Jet

The aircraft moves into testing ahead of its first flight and will restore Sweden’s long‑range airborne radar capability after the country transferred older AEW planes to Ukraine.

Overview

  • Saab presented the first Swedish-configured GlobalEye on Oct. 15, 2026, and the airframe has entered testing and verification before its first flight.
  • Sweden has ordered three GlobalEye aircraft, the first two contracted in 2022 and a third added in 2024 to replace two Saab 340 ASC 890 radar planes given to Ukraine.
  • The Swedish jets, designated S 106, combine Saab’s Erieye ER extended‑range radar and other sensors on a Bombardier Global 6000 airframe to detect targets over air, sea and land for more than 11 hours of endurance.
  • Deliveries to the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration are scheduled to begin in 2027 and the fleet is planned to be based at Ärna Air Base near Uppsala.
  • The rollout comes as GlobalEye demand grows internationally — existing operators and recent orders from France and others, plus a Dutch cooperation plan and NATO interest, could affect production and fleet sharing arrangements.
