Saab Unveils Optionally Crewed CB90 CX Combat Boat

Its 18 m hull hosts radar, missiles or a short-range air-defence gun to let coastal fleets distribute sensing and strike.

Overview

  • Saab publicly revealed the CB90 Capability X (CB90 CX) on Monday ahead of Euronaval 2026 as an 18 m, higher-payload successor to the CB90 family built for crewed, remote or autonomous use.
  • The company showed three initial mission fits: an ISR version with the Sea Giraffe 1X radar, an anti-ship fit carrying MBDA Marte ER missiles for beyond‑horizon strikes, and a SHORAD fit using Rheinmetall’s Seasnake 30 naval gun.
  • The CX is built around Saab’s open Combat Core digital backbone and its Autonomous Ocean Core software so boats can be controlled from shore or run with AI-assisted autonomy.
  • Saab says the boat tops 40 knots, has a range of about 300 nautical miles at operating speed, carries up to 10 people and offers more than a 50% increase in payload versus the CB90 NG; the first hull is in final acceptance trials for Sweden, the launch customer.
  • Production is already under way for Swedish orders and Saab is expanding its Docksta facility to double output as it markets the CX to NATO and allied navies to enable more distributed coastal strike and defence options.
