Saab Unveils CB90 CX, a Multimission Optionally Crewed Combat Boat

The 18‑metre design pairs an open digital Combat Core with built‑in autonomy to disperse sensors and weapons across many small, networked boats.

Overview

  • Saab publicly unveiled the CB90 CX ahead of Euronaval 2026, and the first hull is already in production and undergoing final acceptance trials for delivery to the Swedish Navy.
  • The CB90 CX is an 18‑metre, 4‑metre beam craft with more than 40‑knot top speed, a range above 300 nautical miles at high speed, capacity for up to 10 people, and more than 50 percent higher payload (over 5 tonnes) than the CB90 NG.
  • The vessel uses a new open‑architecture Combat Core that combines ship automation, platform monitoring, fire control and steer‑by‑wire, and it integrates Saab’s Autonomous Ocean Core to enable remote or fully uncrewed operations.
  • Saab is offering three initial mission fits: an ISR version with the Sea Giraffe 1X radar, an anti‑ship fit shown with MBDA’s Marte ER missile for beyond‑horizon strikes, and a SHORAD fit using Rheinmetall’s Seasnake 30 automatic cannon, which Sweden’s FMV has already ordered for CB90s.
  • Saab is expanding its Docksta production site to double output so it can supply Sweden as launch customer and allied navies, reflecting a shift in Swedish doctrine toward many fast, mobile platforms rather than larger ships and enabling dispersed sensing, strike and air‑defence at sea.
