SA Weather Service Ends Impact Warnings After Friday Wind Alert

A cooler, partly cloudy Saturday is expected with isolated showers alongside lingering very cold pockets in parts of the Eastern Cape.

Overview

  • The South African Weather Service issued a yellow level 1 warning for damaging winds in parts of the north-eastern Eastern Cape on Friday, warning of localised damage, fallen trees and possible power and communications interruptions.
  • By Saturday SAWS did not issue any impact-based warnings and instead forecast a generally cool, partly cloudy day with showers and rain in some provinces.
  • SAWS had warned that a cold front would bring very cold, wet and windy conditions on Friday to the southern Namakwa District (Northern Cape) and Witzenberg Municipality (Western Cape) with daytime maximums around 8–10°C.
  • Very cold pockets were forecast for Chris Hani, Joe Gqabi and Alfred Nzo districts of the Eastern Cape on Saturday, creating a risk of hypothermia for people exposed to the elements and added strain for vulnerable livestock.
  • The service also flagged elevated UVB risk for some provinces, with Gauteng recorded as high and KwaZulu‑Natal as very high, and advised residents to protect property from wind and take sun and cold-weather precautions.
