Ryobi Recalls 780,000 Electric Pressure Washers Over Explosion Hazard

Regulators cite a faulty capacitor that can rupture, prompting free repair kits for owners.

Overview

  • U.S. regulators announced a recall of about 764,000 units in the country, with roughly 16,000 more in Canada under a parallel notice.
  • The affected Ryobi models are RY142300 and RY142711VNM, which are brushless electric pressure washers.
  • Reports to the CPSC cite 135 overheating incidents in the U.S., including 41 explosions that caused 32 injuries to fingers, hands, faces and eyes, while Health Canada reported no additional Canadian cases.
  • Consumers are told to stop using the products and can request a free repair kit with a replacement capacitor at ryobitools.com/recall or by calling 800-597-9624; proof of purchase is not required.
  • The washers were sold for about $300 to $400 at Home Depot, Direct Tools Factory Outlet and online from July 2017 through June 2024, with units manufactured in Vietnam and China.
