Ryanair to Pull Nearly 1 Million Winter Seats From Spain’s Regional Airports Over Aena Fee Hike

The carrier plans to redirect capacity to markets it considers more competitive in protest of Aena’s 6.5% charge increase for 2026.

Overview

  • Ryanair will detail the affected routes and airports at a press briefing in Madrid next Wednesday.
  • Aena has set a 6.5% rise in regulated airport charges for 2026 to €11.03 per passenger, a move estimated to add about €218 million in revenue based on traffic projections.
  • Capacity removed from regional airports in Spain will be reallocated to countries such as Italy, Sweden, Croatia, Hungary and Morocco.
  • Eddie Wilson accuses Aena of using monopoly power to raise prices and urges transferring management of weaker regional airports to autonomous communities or selling underused facilities.
  • The airline points to earlier cuts this summer of about 800,000 seats and 12 routes, including exits from Jerez and Valladolid and reductions at Vigo, Santiago, Zaragoza, Asturias and Santander.
