Ryanair Sets App-Only Boarding, Ending Paper Passes on Nov. 12

Ryanair cites speed and sustainability benefits, drawing watchdogs' questions about access for travelers without smartphones.

Overview

  • From 12 November 2025, boarding on Ryanair flights will require a digital pass in the myRyanair app, replacing printed boarding passes.
  • The rollout was pushed from earlier plans to a quieter post‑autumn‑holiday window to reduce disruption during the switch.
  • CEO Michael O’Leary says checked‑in passengers will receive free help at airports if phones fail, with gates able to use sequence numbers to board travelers.
  • Passengers can still obtain a printed pass at airport counters for a fee listed by departure country—€30 in Spain, €40 in Austria, and €55/£55 elsewhere in the EU/UK—with the prior €20 reprint charge dropped.
  • Ryanair reports more than 80% already use digital passes and projects saving about 300 tonnes of paper annually, while consumer groups including Test Achats and Germany’s VZBV warn the policy could exclude some travelers and note rivals still offer printed options.
