Ryanair Moves to App-Only Boarding Passes on Nov. 12

Ryanair frames the app mandate as a faster, greener way to board.

Overview

  • Starting Wednesday, passengers must present a digital boarding pass in the myRyanair app to board, with printed passes no longer accepted.
  • The airline says nearly 80% of its more than 207 million annual passengers already use mobile passes and projects quicker processing with up to about 300 tonnes less paper each year.
  • Some airports still require paper passes, including all in Morocco, those in Turkey except Dalaman, and Tirana in Albania, so travelers from these locations must carry a printout.
  • If a traveler has checked in online but loses their phone or runs out of battery, Ryanair will issue a free boarding pass at the airport, while those who have not checked in online must pay the airport check‑in fee (typically £55/€55, £30/€30 in Spain, £40/€40 in Austria).
  • Ryanair says website check‑in remains possible, but boarding requires the app’s digital pass, and reporting notes concerns that the requirement increases exposure to in‑app upselling.
