Ryanair Goes Fully Digital on Boarding Passes as Day-One Compliance Tops 98%

Ryanair cites cost savings with campaigners warning of digital exclusion.

Overview

  • From 12 November, home‑printed boarding passes are no longer accepted and passengers must present a digital pass in the myRyanair app after completing online check‑in.
  • Travellers who arrive without having checked in online face the usual airport check‑in fee of about £55, while those already checked in can get a free reissued paper pass if a phone is lost or the battery dies.
  • The airline reported a smooth launch with more than 700 flights and over 100,000 passengers on day one, with over 98% using digital passes and the remainder issued free paper passes at airport desks.
  • Some departures still require printed boarding passes, including airports in Morocco, Turkey except Dalaman, and Tirana in Albania, with paper passes provided locally.
  • Ryanair says the change could save up to €40m annually and eliminate around 300 tonnes of paper, as charities caution that older or offline passengers may face barriers.
