Ryanair Flight Turns Back to Birmingham After Severe Turbulence Injures Passengers

Ryanair cites severe turbulence, saying a few passengers received care before a replacement aircraft completed the trip.

Overview

  • Flight FR1121 to Tenerife, a Boeing 737 Max, declared a 7700 emergency over Brittany at cruising altitude after departing Birmingham around 2:50pm on 28 December.
  • The aircraft descended to about 10,000ft and landed back at Birmingham roughly 1 hour 32 minutes after take-off.
  • Passengers reported the turbulence struck during cabin service, and emergency crews met the aircraft at a remote stand to assist the injured.
  • Ryanair said the diversion was due to air turbulence and confirmed a small number of passengers were provided with medical assistance on arrival.
  • The route was later operated by a replacement jet, departing Birmingham around 9:06–9:21pm and arriving in Tenerife overnight.
