Ryan Pressly Retires After 13 MLB Seasons

The two-time All-Star built his reputation on elite spin rates, culminating in a central role in the Astros’ 2022 championship.

Overview

  • Pressly announced the decision Saturday in a statement to The Athletic and in a social media post calling the move bittersweet.
  • He logged 13 MLB seasons with the Twins, Astros and Cubs, finishing with a 3.33 ERA over 691 1/3 innings in 667 appearances and 117 saves.
  • In Houston he became closer in 2020, converting 102 of 118 save chances with a 2.99 ERA over four seasons.
  • His postseason résumé includes 45 1/3 innings with a 2.78 ERA, appearances in two combined no-hitters in 2022 and the final outs of the World Series clincher.
  • After the Astros signed Josh Hader, Pressly moved back to a setup role, waived no-trade protection to join the Cubs, struggled in 2025, was released in August and did not sign elsewhere despite reported interest from Minnesota and Houston.
