RWE Sets Oct. 25 Noon Demolition for Gundremmingen’s Two Cooling Towers

The blast marks a step in a decades-long decommissioning as RWE repurposes the site for a permitted 400 MW battery plus other energy projects.

Overview

  • RWE confirmed the controlled explosions for Saturday, 25 October 2025 at 12:00, covering both 161‑meter towers at the former nuclear plant.
  • The Thüringer Sprenggesellschaft, which handled Grafenrheinfeld’s tower demolition in 2024, has been commissioned for the Gundremmingen job.
  • Roughly 11,000 tonnes of debris are expected from the collapse, and operators plan to reuse the material on-site as the foundation for new facilities.
  • RWE cites €2.8 billion in provisions for the project, with authorities estimating 15–20 years until the end of nuclear regulatory oversight and company plans targeting completion in the mid to late 2030s.
  • About 1.8 million tonnes of material will be processed during dismantling, with roughly 0.6% destined for Konrad containers, while redevelopment plans include a permitted 400 MW battery (~700 MWh), a hydrogen‑capable gas peaker targeted no earlier than 2027, and a prospective solar park.
