RWE Quits Namibia Green Hydrogen Offtake as European Demand Lags

The utility cites slower European uptake that leaves the Namibian export scheme seeking new private buyers.

Overview

  • RWE confirmed on Oct. 2 that it has exited plans to purchase green ammonia from Namibia’s Hyphen project.
  • The company said demand in Europe for hydrogen and derivatives such as ammonia is developing more slowly than expected.
  • A 2022 memorandum had envisioned RWE taking up to 300,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually from 2027, while Hyphen aimed for around 1 million tonnes per year for export.
  • Project partner Enertrag said the loss of RWE removes a short‑term offtaker but does not alter long‑term development plans.
  • Germany’s economy ministry said Berlin is not involved, and despite a 2024 strategic designation the project has received no public funding and remains privately financed.
