RWE Installs All Recyclable Blades at UK’s Sofia Offshore Wind Farm

The Hull-built blades use a separable resin that enables recycling at end of life.

Overview

  • RWE confirmed installation of all 150 recyclable Siemens Gamesa blades at the Sofia project on Dogger Bank, marking the UK’s first large-scale offshore use of the technology.
  • Turbine installation has reached 62 of 100 SG 14-222 DD units, with full installation targeted for the first half of 2026.
  • Commercial operations are expected in the third quarter of 2026, delivering 1.4 GW of capacity to power about 1.2 million UK homes.
  • The blades were manufactured in Hull using a resin system that allows their composite materials to be separated and reused after service.
  • The site lies about 195 kilometers off the UK’s east coast, and RWE is extending this circular-blade approach from its Kaskasi project to future deployments such as Thor.
