RWE Ends Namibia Hydrogen Plans, Leaving Hyphen Project to Seek New Buyers

RWE cites weak European demand for green hydrogen in explaining its retreat from Namibia.

Overview

  • RWE confirmed it is no longer pursuing projects in Namibia, ending its 2022 intent to buy about 300,000–350,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually from Hyphen.
  • The company said industrial demand in Europe for green hydrogen and ammonia is developing more slowly than expected.
  • Hyphen’s consortium—Namibia holding 24% alongside Enertrag and Nicholas Holdings—called the move a short‑term setback and is seeking alternative offtakers.
  • The project foresees investment exceeding $10 billion to produce around 1 million tonnes of ammonia per year, but remains early in permitting and site studies with a final investment decision planned for late 2026.
  • Germany’s economy ministry said it has not funded the venture and favors a staged, demand‑led import strategy, while Namibia had projected significant fiscal gains from the project.
