RWE Breaks Ground on Germany’s Largest Battery Storage at Gundremmingen

Bavaria’s Gundremmingen site will convert a retired nuclear grid connection into high-capacity storage providing near two-hour output by early 2028.

Overview

  • RWE began construction on October 29 of a 400MW/700MWh battery energy storage system at the decommissioning Gundremmingen nuclear site in Bavaria.
  • The project carries an investment of about €230 million and is engineered for roughly 1.75 hours of discharge at full output.
  • The installation will reuse the nuclear plant’s existing grid connection to help stabilise electricity supply during periods of low wind and solar generation.
  • The system will comprise over 200 container units with around 850,000 lithium iron phosphate cells and about 100 inverters for rapid grid response.
  • Commercial operation is targeted for early 2028, with the facility set to become the largest battery storage asset in Germany, surpassing Eco Stor’s Bollingstedt project.
