Rwandan Doctor Faces Trial in France Over Role in 1994 Genocide

- Sosthene Munyemana, a 68-year-old Rwandan doctor living in France, goes on trial in Paris for his alleged role in the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
- Munyemana faces charges of genocide, crimes against humanity, and complicity in such crimes. If convicted, he faces a life sentence.
- He is accused of co-signing a motion of support for the interim government that supervised the genocide and of participating in a local committee and meetings that organized roundups of Tutsi civilians.
- This is the sixth case related to the Rwandan genocide that is coming to court in Paris. The trial is scheduled to run until Dec. 19.
- France has been one of the top destinations for fugitives fleeing justice over the Rwandan massacres. Since 2014 France has tried and convicted several figures including a former spy chief, two ex-mayors, and a former hotel chauffeur.
