Rwanda Bill Returns to Commons Amid Controversy

Tory MPs seek to toughen legislation, while One Nation group warns against breaching international treaties.

  • The Rwanda Bill, aimed at limiting individual challenges by migrants and preventing attempts by Strasbourg judges to block deportation flights to Rwanda, is set to return to the House of Commons next week.
  • More than 30 Tory MPs are expected to back amendments to 'toughen' the bill, including clauses to ignore 'pyjama injunctions' from the European Court of Human Rights and to block migrants from bringing individual claims to suspend flights.
  • The One Nation group of MPs has warned against any amendments that would breach international treaties, including the European Convention on Human Rights, the UN Refugee Convention, and the Convention against Torture.
  • MPs will have two days to scrutinise the bill at the committee stage next week, and it will also face heavy scrutiny in the House of Lords.
  • The Home Office has confirmed £290m has been committed to Rwanda, despite no flights having taken off, and Labour is calling for transparency on future payments, claiming the cost could balloon to £400m.
