Overview

  • President William Ruto publicly acknowledged on June 11 that Albert Ojwang’s death occurred “at the hands of the police” and ordered the National Police Service to fully cooperate with the IPOA investigation.
  • The Independent Policing Oversight Authority has identified five officers involved in Ojwang’s arrest and secured formal statements, blood samples and related police records.
  • A post-mortem examination on June 10 ruled out suicide and found Ojwang suffered a head injury from blunt force trauma, neck compression and multiple bruises.
  • Preliminary IPOA findings indicate that CCTV equipment at Nairobi’s Central Police Station was tampered with and has been sent for forensic analysis to establish the sequence of events.
