Rutgers Fraternity Suspended as Prosecutors Probe Injury That Left Student Critical

Prosecutors are examining possible hazing, with the chapter suspended during the inquiry.

Overview

  • Rutgers police found a 19-year-old student injured and unresponsive after a disconnected 911 call around 12:26 a.m. Wednesday at a College Avenue residence, and he remains in critical condition at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
  • The Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office is leading an active investigation into whether hazing occurred and has not announced any charges or identified the student.
  • Rutgers ordered Alpha Sigma Phi to cease all activity and placed the chapter on organizational disciplinary probation through May 18 and social probation through Nov. 3.
  • Alpha Sigma Phi’s national organization put the Rutgers chapter on interim suspension and said it will close the chapter and permanently expel members if hazing is confirmed, noting the chapter received hazing training last month.
  • New Brunswick officials posted an unsafe-structure notice on the fraternity house, and reports of a possible electrical injury remain unconfirmed by authorities.
