Rustad Survives B.C. Conservative Leadership Review With 70.66% Support

Low turnout leaves Rustad facing questions over party unity and membership controls.

Overview

  • Only 1,268 members voted, about 15% of more than 8,000 in good standing, according to the party.
  • Rustad won in 78 of 93 ridings, lost in 10, tied in three, and two ridings recorded no votes.
  • Members approved his 11‑point leadership pledge with roughly 80% support, including policies on crime, schools, property rights, taxes, immigration and healthcare.
  • The party says about 2,100 suspicious memberships in Kelowna were cancelled before voting, and several staffers and treasurer Robert McRudden have left their roles.
  • An official returning officer, Mark Robertson, administered the review with an impartial third party counting ballots, as Rustad prepares to meet a divided caucus after some MLAs previously urged his resignation.
