Russian Strike on Kyiv Housing for Chernobyl Survivors Kills Widow of Disaster’s First Victim

  • Ukrainian outlets and officials confirmed that Nataliia Khodemchuk died in hospital after suffering extensive burns from the Nov. 13–14 overnight strike on a residential building in Kyiv’s Troieshchyna district.
  • Authorities reported seven fatalities and about 35 injuries in the capital from the barrage that hit multiple residential sites.
  • The State Agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management said her apartment was destroyed by fire and noted the building housed families of former Chernobyl plant employees.
  • The blast also damaged the flat of former Chernobyl engineer Oleksii Ananenko, whose wife described waking to the sound of a drone followed by an immediate explosion and escaping through heavy smoke.
  • Ukrainian leaders condemned the assault as designed to terrorize civilians, with reports citing roughly 430 drones and 18 missiles launched across the country, largely targeting Kyiv.
