Russian Strike Cuts Power to Chernobyl Containment as Generators Bridge Outage

Ukraine labels the attacks a global security threat, President Zelenskyy says.

Overview

  • Ukrainian officials said a strike on a substation in Slavutych cut the main power feed to the protective structure over Chernobyl’s destroyed Reactor 4 and caused outages in the nearby town.
  • The IAEA reported the site’s three shutdown reactors were switched to an alternate power line and the containment structure was supplied by two diesel generators while teams worked on repairs.
  • Ukraine’s energy minister later said electricity to the containment was restored the same evening and radiation levels remained within norms.
  • Zelenskyy said more than 20 drones hit Slavutych and described continued attacks on energy and nuclear-safety infrastructure as a threat to global security.
  • Separately, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant has been off the grid since September 23 and is relying on diesel for cooling, with the IAEA citing about ten days of fuel remaining according to the plant’s Russian-installed management.
