Russian Cold Blast Hits Italy With Near-Winter Temperatures and Powerful Bora Winds

Forecasters say the chill will peak by Friday, then ease as milder Atlantic air returns this weekend.

Overview

  • Temperatures are dropping roughly 10–12°C below average, with lows near 4°C and highs around 13–14°C in the coldest areas.
  • Strong thunderstorms with possible hail are affecting the North-East and parts of Lombardy before shifting to a rapid, intense phase over Marche, Abruzzo and Molise, with a light dusting of snow above 1,500 meters on the Apennines.
  • Bora, Grecale and Tramontana winds are intensifying the cold, with gusts forecast to reach roughly 90–100 km/h and elevate coastal and maritime hazards.
  • The Civil Protection issued yellow weather alerts for eight regions: Calabria, Emilia-Romagna, Abruzzo, Basilicata, Marche, Molise, Puglia and Sicilia.
  • Thursday is expected to be colder with fewer widespread events, Friday could bring morning frosts in parts of the Centre‑North, and a shift to milder Atlantic flow is anticipated from Saturday, with north-western and Tyrrhenian areas relatively more sheltered.
