Russian Bombardments Kill Civilians as Ukraine Retaliates with Deep Drone Strikes

A recent surge of civilian bombings by Russian forces has led Ukraine to strike Russian refineries deep inside its territory; Ukrainian authorities are now probing possible war crimes in attacks on buses and clinics.

Overview

  • Over the weekend Russian forces launched dozens of rocket, artillery and drone assaults across Dnipropetrovsk, Kherson, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions, killing civilians and inflicting widespread damage.
  • In Kherson’s suburbs a Russian drone struck a minibus on August 9, killing two civilians and later concussing three police officers in a second strike during body-recovery operations.
  • Ukraine’s air defenses repelled waves of Russian loitering munitions and shot down dozens of incoming drones overnight, the Air Force reported.
  • On August 10 Kyiv’s forces carried out a cross-border drone raid on an industrial site in Russia’s Saratov region, killing one person and damaging apartments and refinery infrastructure.
  • The General Staff documented 160 ground clashes on August 10, including 43 in the Pokrovsk sector, as authorities opened pre-trial investigations into possible war crimes against civilian buses and clinics.
