Russia Touts ZNPP License and Potential Power Deals as Reports Cite U.S. Crypto Mining Interest

Despite reports of U.S.–Russia talks on crypto mining, the reactors cannot be restarted under IAEA safety restrictions during the conflict.

Overview

  • Rosatom’s Alexey Likhachev said only the designated operating organization can run Zaporizhzhia under Russian law and noted a license has been issued for power unit No. 1.
  • Rosatom said it is receiving signals via the IAEA and foreign partners of U.S. readiness to cooperate on future ZNPP electricity for large consumers such as data centers and mining farms, contingent on a peace settlement.
  • ZNPP’s communications director said the plant could technically supply power to mining or data facilities but stressed generation requires an end to hostilities and security guarantees.
  • The IAEA’s Rafael Mariano Grossi reiterated that nuclear safety at the site is precarious and the six reactors cannot be restarted while the war continues.
  • Russian media, citing Kommersant, reported U.S.–Russia discussions on management models and possible crypto mining and power deliveries, but these claims remain unconfirmed and no agreement has been reached.
