Russia Successfully Tests Massive Nuclear Strike Capability Amid Withdrawal from Global Nuclear Test Ban Treaty

Simulated nuclear strike involved missiles from a land-based silo, a nuclear submarine and air launch; Bill revoking ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty heads to President Putin for final approval.

  • Russia has successfully tested their capability to deliver a 'massive' nuclear strike involving a land-based silo, a nuclear submarine and long-range bomber aircraft. The military exercise was designed to deliver a response to an enemy nuclear strike.
  • Russia's parliament has backed the withdrawal of Russia's ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT), a global treaty that bans all physical testing of nuclear warheads.
  • The bill to revoke ratification of the CTBT is now moving to President Putin for final approval. This move could see Russia potentially resume testing of nuclear weapons, which is raising concerns globally.
  • The testing and possible withdrawal from the CTBT are seen as attempts to pressure the United States and other countries supporting Ukraine. It is also viewed as a signal of Russia's readiness to use nuclear weapons in order to discourage Western military support to Ukraine.
  • Should Russia proceed with the revocation, it will align with the position of the United States, which signed but did not ratify the CTBT. Russia's Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov has stated that Russia will only resume nuclear tests if the U.S does so first.
