Russia Says It Foiled 91-Drone Strike on Putin’s Residence, Kyiv Denies Involvement

Moscow signals a tougher negotiating posture with the United States and says targets for possible retaliation are set.

Overview

  • Russia’s defense ministry and foreign minister said 91 long-range drones targeted the president’s Novgorod Oblast residence overnight Dec. 28–29 and were all shot down with no casualties or damage reported.
  • Sergey Lavrov and Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said Russia will revise its negotiating position with Washington and that the military has identified targets and timing for a potential response.
  • Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected the allegation, saying no such attack occurred and calling the claim another lie.
  • Ushakov said Vladimir Putin informed U.S. President Donald Trump and described Trump as shocked, while Trump later told reporters he had just learned of the reported incident and called it very bad.
  • Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said any hardened stance will not be detailed publicly as talks with the U.S. continue, and reactions broadened as Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev condemned the reported action and several Western figures called it an escalation or a sign Kyiv is not pursuing peace.
