Russia Reports Downing 78 Ukrainian Drones in Three Hours as UN Reviews 'Oreshnik' Strike

Kyiv has moved the UN Security Council to examine Russia's recent use of the Oreshnik missile.

Overview

  • Russia's Defense Ministry said air defenses intercepted 78 Ukrainian fixed‑wing drones between 20:00 and 23:00 Moscow time on January 12 across Crimea, Oryol, Lipetsk, Tula, Bryansk, Voronezh and Rostov regions, plus over the Azov and Black seas.
  • Earlier on January 12, the ministry reported shooting down 19 drones from 08:00 to 16:00 over Crimea, Krasnodar, Kursk and Belgorod as well as the Azov Sea, and 13 overnight across Rostov, Crimea, Adygea, Kursk, Voronezh and the Black Sea.
  • Local authorities detailed civilian impacts, with Voronezh reporting damage to 12 apartment blocks, 43 private homes and 86 cars, four people injured and one death, while Belgorod’s governor counted about 30 drone attacks over six districts without reported casualties.
  • Kursk region cycled UAV danger alerts on and off through January 11–12 as regional air defenses reported activity and readiness.
  • Russia reiterated that a January 9 strike using the Oreshnik system disabled the Lviv state aircraft repair plant, alleging drone production and fighter servicing there, and said Iskander and Kalibr strikes hit two Kyiv drone-assembly sites and energy facilities supporting Ukraine’s defense industry.
