Russia Readies Nuclear-Powered Cruise Missile Test Before Alaska Summit

Commercial imagery with vessel and aviation alerts suggests Russia is preparing a cruise missile trial timed to overlap Putin’s meeting with President Trump in Alaska

Russia has also accused the United States of sending the systems to the Philippines and Australia for drills.

Overview

  • Planet Labs imagery shows increased shipments, equipment and personnel at Novaya Zemlya’s Pankovo site with the missile launcher’s protective shelter repositioned.
  • Two radar-equipped aircraft at Rogachevo airfield and at least six ships, including the cargo vessel Teriberka, are en route or stationed to support the test.
  • Russia issued notices to mariners and FAA NOTAMs outlining an August 9–22 launch window that aligns with observed activity and maritime warnings.
  • A test carried out this week would coincide with Putin’s talks with President Trump in Alaska, a scheduling choice that experts say can be adjusted to send a political signal.
  • The Burevestnik’s history of failed or partial trials and a deadly 2019 explosion highlight unresolved technical, safety and arms-control concerns as New START approaches expiry.
