Russia Pounds Ukraine’s Grid With Missiles and Drones as Kyiv Presses U.S. for Air Defenses

Repair crews report progress after one of the largest salvos of the war, with key power plants and gas capacity severely damaged.

Overview

  • Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched 465 attack drones and 32 missiles, with defenses downing 405 drones and 15 missiles.
  • Power and water failed across Kyiv’s left bank and metro service was halted on that side of the Dnipro; officials reported a 7-year-old killed in Zaporizhzhia and additional fatalities Saturday in several regions.
  • Grid operator Ukrenergo reported widespread outages in the capital and nine regions, as DTEK restored electricity to at least 678,000 customers and warned thermal power plants were gravely damaged; gas production capacity remains heavily degraded from earlier strikes.
  • New overnight attacks cut electricity in parts of the Odessa region, with DTEK reporting service restored to more than 240,000 there and over 800,000 in the capital since Friday.
  • President Volodymyr Zelensky held a “very positive” call with U.S. President Donald Trump on strengthening air defenses, and a delegation led by Prime Minister Ioulia Svyrydenko will travel to Washington to discuss sanctions, energy support and air-defense needs.
