Russia Picks 100-Year-Old Ruza Fir as Kremlin New Year Tree, Felling Set for Dec. 8

Officials pledge modern technology to preserve the tree through cutting, transport, installation, decoration, then recycling.

Overview

  • The Office of Presidential Affairs confirmed the selection of a fir from the Ruza municipal district for installation on Cathedral Square in the Moscow Kremlin.
  • The tree measures 26 meters in height with a 64-centimeter trunk girth and an 11-meter span of lower branches.
  • A commission reviewed 24 candidates over the summer and autumn using criteria such as a straight trunk, pyramidal shape, branch spread of at least eight meters, appropriate age and height, and needle durability.
  • Cutting, transportation, mounting, festive decoration and subsequent recycling will be carried out with modern methods to ensure preservation and safety.
  • The display typically lasts about three weeks, continuing a live-tree tradition since 1996, with artificial trees used in 2001–2005 during extreme cold, and last year’s tree sourced from Mozhaysk district.
