Russia Moves to Expand Hindi Courses at Universities as Student Interest Grows

Officials cite rising enrollments tied to closer economic links with India.

Overview

  • Deputy Minister Konstantin Mogilevsky urged universities to increase Hindi study, telling TASS, "We want more of our students to study Hindi."
  • He said enrollments are rising with study groups two to three times larger, and institutions including MGIMO, RSUH, Moscow State’s Institute of Asian and African Studies, and Moscow State Linguistic University now offer courses.
  • Programs are also growing at St. Petersburg State University and Kazan Federal University as opportunities to learn Hindi widen across Russia.
  • India’s ambassador in Moscow, Vinay Kumar, reported growing demand for Indian hires—especially in machinery and electronics—with most workers now in construction and textiles and higher consular needs following the influx.
  • Indian Embassy figures put the community at about 14,000, with roughly 500 businessmen, around 300 registered companies, and about 4,500 students, while coverage notes India’s larger purchases of Russian oil and a recent U.S. tariff increase on Indian imports to 50%.
