Russia Launches Massive Night Strike on Ukraine's Energy Network

The strikes signal a potential winter campaign to worsen civilian living conditions and further strain Ukraine's air defenses and backup power systems.

Overview

  • Russian forces carried out a large overnight assault on Wednesday, Sept. 30, using roughly 188–190 drones and missiles against Kyiv and other regions that left civilians dead and cut electricity and water to thousands of homes.
  • Ukraine's air defenses reported intercepting about 155 drones and five ballistic missiles but said some weapons penetrated defenses and struck power plants, a Kyiv data center and port and industrial sites.
  • Ukrainian officials and the main utility DTEK reported fatalities including a child, widespread damage to energy infrastructure and temporary outages affecting about 8,000 households while crews worked to restore service.
  • NATO confirmed receipt of a Russian diplomatic note that warned of using all available means, including nuclear arms, if Kaliningrad were isolated and the alliance publicly rejected the threats as unjustified.
  • The attacks come as Kyiv reports territorial gains of about 176 square kilometers in its counteroffensive and prepares contingency plans and calls for more air‑defense systems ahead of the winter months.
