Russia Launches Mass Air and Drone Strikes Across Ukraine, Kharkiv Energy Infrastructure Damaged

Military reports call it one of the winter’s most intense days, with thousands of kamikaze drones recorded.

Overview

  • Ukraine’s General Staff reported 117 engagements on January 17 along with 66 airstrikes, 163 guided bombs, roughly 3,585 kamikaze drones and 2,857 shelling incidents.
  • Kharkiv’s mayor said an evening Molniya drone hit a non-residential building in Slobidskyi district and later struck a critical infrastructure site with no immediate casualties reported.
  • Earlier in the day, a strike on an energy facility in Kharkiv’s Industrial district caused very significant damage, prompting warnings that maintaining heat and power is increasingly difficult.
  • Guided aerial bombs hit suburbs of Sumy, damaging homes and vehicles and injuring two people, while power outages de-energized a water intake and could force reduced water service on January 18 if electricity is not restored.
  • On the Pokrovsk sector, Ukrainian forces reported 35 enemy attacks and said 109 Russian personnel were neutralized, including 49 killed, along with multiple pieces of equipment destroyed.
