Russia, Iran Sign SMR Memorandum as Rosatom Ships Reactor Vessels to Egypt and Turkey

Tehran’s nuclear agency signals imminent design and construction agreements under the pact.

  • The memorandum on small nuclear power plants was signed in Moscow by Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev and Iran’s atomic chief Mohammad Eslami.
  • Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization said sectoral organizations will now draft and sign agreements for SMR design and construction to implement the memorandum.
  • Rosatom dispatched two VVER-1200 reactor pressure vessels simultaneously for Egypt’s El-Dabaa Unit 1 and Turkey’s Akkuyu Unit 4 during World Atomic Week.
  • Egypt’s energy minister Mahmoud Esmat said the El-Dabaa vessel is expected to arrive in the first week of November.
  • Turkey’s deputy energy minister Zafed Demirjan said Akkuyu’s first unit is slated to start next year with all four reactors operating by 2028.
