Russia Hits Ukraine With 12-Hour Barrage of Nearly 600 Drones and Dozens of Missiles

The overnight assault highlighted Ukraine’s urgent need for stronger air defenses.

Overview

  • Kyiv reported at least four people killed, including a 12-year-old girl, and dozens wounded across Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Sumy, Cherkasy and Mykolaiv, with damage to homes, a cardiology center and a kindergarten.
  • Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched roughly 595 exploding drones and 48 missiles, most of which were intercepted, though 31 drones and five missiles struck 16 sites and debris caused additional damage.
  • Poland scrambled fighter jets, placed ground-based air defenses on high alert and briefly restricted airspace over Lublin and Rzeszów as a precaution during the cross-border strikes.
  • Moscow said it targeted military facilities, while Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the UN that Russia does not direct drones or missiles at EU or NATO states and warned of a decisive response to any aggression.
  • European vigilance has been elevated after recent drone sightings that disrupted airports in Denmark, Oslo and Schiphol, while Kyiv points to new air-defense support, including a Patriot system received from Israel.
