Russia Details Lviv 'Oreshnik' Strike, Air Defenses Down 78 Drones as UN Security Council Convenes

Kyiv asked the UN to review the missile’s use, calling it a threat to European security.

Overview

  • Russia’s Defense Ministry said the Jan. 9 use of the Oreshnik system disabled the Lviv State Aircraft Repair Plant, which it described as producing long‑range strike UAVs and servicing F‑16 and MiG‑29 fighters, with workshops, storage areas and aerodrome infrastructure hit.
  • Russian air defenses reported successive intercept waves on Jan. 12, including 13 drones overnight, six over Rostov in the morning, 19 during daytime hours, and 78 downed between 20:00 and 23:00 across seven regions and the Black and Azov seas.
  • The UN Security Council met at Ukraine’s request to discuss Oreshnik’s use; Ukrainian foreign minister Andriy Sybiha warned it endangers European security, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said allied support for Kyiv will continue.
  • Russia reported battlefield gains and losses inflicted on Ukraine, claiming the capture of Novoboykovske in Zaporizhzhia and more than 1,265 Ukrainian personnel lost in a day, alongside strikes on defense‑industrial, energy and transport facilities.
  • Regional officials described ongoing drone activity and civilian impacts, including about 30 UAV attacks in Belgorod region with damage but no injuries, more than 280 drones downed this month in Kursk and a new drone alert there, two civilians wounded by shelling in Zaporizhzhia region, and damage in Voronezh from a prior UAV attack.
