Russia Claims New Gains in Zaporizhzhia as Ukraine Hits Samara Refinery and Repels Pokrovsk Assaults

Kyiv is coupling deep strikes on Russian refineries with urgent appeals for more air defenses.

Overview

  • Russia said its forces captured Rivnopillya and Mala Tokmachka in the Zaporizhzhia region, adding to earlier claims in nearby villages, while Ukraine has not confirmed those advances.
  • Ukraine’s General Staff reported a strike on the Novokuybyshevsk oil refinery in Russia’s Samara region, citing explosions and a fire, a day after announcing a hit on the Ryazan refinery near Moscow.
  • Ukrainian forces reported the heaviest fighting around Pokrovsk, saying they repelled 75 assaults on Nov. 16 and recently conducted search-and-destroy operations across 26.6 km² in the district.
  • Civilian tolls continued to rise, with regional officials reporting at least three people killed overnight in Balakliya after earlier tallies of multiple deaths and dozens wounded across several regions.
  • President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia launched roughly 1,000 strike drones, nearly 980 guided aerial bombs, and 36 missiles over the past week as he pressed partners for additional air-defense systems.
