Russia and Belarus Launch Sapad 2025 Near NATO Borders as Allies Tighten Defenses After Polish Drone Incursions

The exercise features declared nuclear-scenario training and reported Oreschnik missile involvement, reviving Western fears that such drills can mask force movements.

Overview

  • Poland says at least 19 Russian drones crossed its airspace during the Sept. 10–11 raid, with at least three downed and NATO sources saying many were explosive-laden and one headed toward the Rzeszow aid hub.
  • Germany doubled its Eurofighter patrols over Poland to four and extended the mission through December, while France is dispatching three Rafales to bolster air policing.
  • Warsaw closed its border with Belarus and tightened flight restrictions in the east, and Latvia shut a strip of airspace along its Russian and Belarusian frontiers for a week.
  • Poland requested an urgent UN Security Council session on the incursions as Moscow criticized the closures and President Trump suggested the breach could have been accidental, a view Polish officials rejected.
  • The drills run Sept. 12–16 with about 13,000 troops in Belarus and roughly 30,000 in Russia, and Polish media report additional troop reinforcements to the border as NATO reviews counter-drone gaps and procurement.
