Russell Crowe Discovers Ancestral Connection to Last Man Beheaded in England

The Oscar-winning actor traces his lineage back to Simon Fraser, the 11th Lord Lovat, known for 'laughing his head off' at his execution in 1747.

  • Russell Crowe has discovered he is a direct descendant of Simon Fraser, the 11th Lord Lovat, who was the last man to be executed by beheading in England in 1747.
  • Crowe's ancestor, known as the 'Old Fox', was executed for high treason after his involvement in the 1745 Jacobite rising.
  • Simon Fraser is said to have laughed on his way to the execution, coining the phrase 'laughing his head off'.
  • Crowe has also traced his lineage back to Luigi Ghezzi, his great-great-great grandfather on his mother’s side, who immigrated to New Zealand in 1864.
  • Crowe's ancestry includes Māori, Scottish, English, German, Irish, Italian, Norwegian and Swedish bloodlines, but the source of his Irish ancestry remains unknown.
