Runoff Expected in Guatemala's Presidential Election

Guatemalans went to the polls Sunday but no candidate received enough votes to win outright, so the top two finishers, former first lady Sandra Torres and Bernardo Arévalo, will face each other in a runoff on August 20.

Torres and Arévalo are both social democrats who oppose same-sex marriage and elective abortion.

The election's legitimacy was questioned due to the exclusion of popular candidates and allegations of irregularities.
