Runner Dies During Cardiff Half Marathon

Organisers say they will withhold personal details to respect the family’s wishes.

Overview

  • A participant suffered a medical emergency during the Cardiff Half Marathon on Sunday and was treated on course before being transferred to hospital, where organisers have since confirmed the runner died.
  • Run4Wales issued the confirmation on Monday and publicly thanked event and hospital medical teams for their rapid response while saying no further personal details will be released.
  • Medical cover on the 13.1-mile route included rapid-response paramedical teams, critical care specialists from local emergency services, ambulances and mobile doctors who attended the runner before hospital transfer.
  • The race drew about 30,000 entrants and is Wales’ largest mass-participation charity event, raising roughly £4 million a year, and it holds an Elite Race Label from World Athletics as part of the SuperHalfs series.
  • Sunday’s death follows earlier fatalities at the event in 2019 and 2024, and organisers have not announced any immediate changes to safety or medical arrangements while the cause of this death remains undisclosed.
