Rumford Man Accused of Pepper-Spraying Woman and 3 Children Is Arrested and Released on Bail

Police cite alcohol as a factor based on witness accounts of a spray discharged during a search for someone.

Overview

  • Police, fire and MedCare crews were dispatched around 7:30 p.m. Sunday to 419 Cumberland St. after callers reported screams and breathing difficulties.
  • Witnesses told officers Donald “Harley” Wilson, 41, went to the apartment looking for another person and, after becoming angry, released pepper spray inside.
  • A 35-year-old woman and children ages 9, 13 and 16 were taken to Rumford Hospital for evaluation, decontamination and treatment.
  • An infant in a neighboring unit was evaluated at the scene as a precaution and did not require hospitalization.
  • Wilson fled before officers arrived, was found walking on Lincoln Avenue, taken into custody without incident, and later charged with four counts of criminal use of disabling chemicals, four counts of assault and disorderly conduct before being released on bail.
