Ruling Lawmakers Review Jail Footage of Yoon’s Refusal During Warrant Attempts

The inspection aims to determine whether the failed warrant execution involved any illegalities or preferential treatment.

Overview

  • On Sept. 1, members of the National Assembly’s judiciary committee visited the Seoul Detention Center to review CCTV from Aug. 1 and Aug. 7 when a special counsel team tried to execute detention warrants against Yoon Suk Yeol.
  • Investigators have said Yoon lay on his cell floor to resist, and DP Rep. Kim Yong-min said after viewing the footage that Yoon refused while in his underwear during both attempts and that his claim of injury was not supported.
  • The committee said it does not plan to release the video publicly, describing the review as a check for potential obstruction or preferential treatment during the enforcement effort.
  • Yoon’s attorneys condemned the committee’s viewing as unlawful, citing inmate administration rules as well as information disclosure and personal data laws.
  • Yoon remains detained on charges including insurrection, treason and abuse of power, has skipped related hearings since July 10, and lawmakers also sought visitation records, with reports citing 348 meetings in an investigators’ room.
